HOBBIES

Throughout my life, I remember I would always have the hardest time whenever I’d get asked about my favorite hobbies. I am a very multi-passionate individual and always had a worry of being misdefined by my answer to that question. Now that everyone (not me) is starting to take up new hobbies during their quarantine, it really got me thinking about redefining my hobbies and ensuring that I make time for them in my daily life.

Too many times to count, I have gone through various phases of having what I would mistakenly think was my hobby, but that would really be something I felt obsessively interested in for a short while but eventually would move on from fairly quickly, never to be spoken of again- horseback riding, karate, gymnastics, even skating to name a few.

Or, on the flip side, I would mistake the term “hobby” for my values and passions. For example, I love spirituality and meditation for the soul, personal development and psychology for the mind, nursing and yoga for the body, volunteering and family time for my heart, and balancing work and play all with a passion, and I partake in some action towards these aspects regularly for my personal and professional life.

But I am not sure if these would be considered hobbies, as these are my passions, purpose and necessities; they are each part of my daily routine or things I personally feel I need to do in order to live my happiest, healthiest and most successful life. Hobbies, to me, are fun or relaxing activities that I am by no means an expert in, but that I enjoy partaking in when I have downtime. They come with little pressure and great pleasure.

“Find three hobbies you love: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative.”

After all this time and all that being said, I am still unable to choose a favorite hobby. However, after a bit of reflection, I was able to come up with my 3 main hobby categories.

1. Blogging.
This hobby stems from my love of reading daily for hours as a child, and writing in my journal nearly every single day for as far back as I can remember. What comes to mind when one thinks of a “blogger” has changed drastically from what it used to be back in 2010 when I started, referring now to more of a lifestyle influencer model role. For me personally, blogging also means placing an emphasis on writing, and creating an online platform to bring together other skills and art forms as well. Since I’ve been blogging, I’ve also gotten more interest and practice in painting, photography and videography/YouTube, all essential and creative parts of my blog today.

2. Music.
This deserves a category of its own and is rooted in my childhood as well, growing up as a choir member in my elementary school and partaking in local Bollywood dance classes as a child. At the end of elementary school and all throughout high school, I was an active member of the concert band as a clarinetest, making the most of our camps, concerts and national competitions. In my college days, I started off as a DJ at our local radio station and worked at a performance arts center while I pursued my minor degree in music with an emphasis in piano. As a young adult, I spent my free time after work taking adult dance classes at my local dance studio, including contemporary and ballet. Music is something I can never get enough of, so when I’m not creating music, I love to enjoy music in all its forms, have my own car dance parties, and go to Zumba classes. My newest venture is attempting to finally learn to play my acoustic guitar (I’ll let you know how that goes).

3. Travel.
Last, but certainly not least, there is my love for traveling around the world. When I was a child, my family made an active effort to do some sort of travel and long vacation every year. Before I turned 30, I had accomplished my goal of visiting every continent (except Antarctica because I’m chronically cold), but I have so many more places on my list that I can only hope to be blessed enough to continue experiencing. I love taking relaxing vacations with family, adventure packed trips with friends, and solo-volunteer trips around the world. My favorite places always end up being the local hotspots over tourist destinations, but I cannot resist a picturesque beach or getting lost in nature. To me, it doesn’t matter if I travel near or far- the main point is to either relax and escape the pressures of daily life, or explore whatever interesting venues are around me as long as I am having fun, experiencing new things, meeting new people, and feeling free and alive!

PS- Blogging makes me money, music keeps me creative, and traveling helps me stay active and in shape. But I feel it fair to include that when I am not actively creating, I also love consuming other forms of art and entertainment such as videos, books, film, television, audio and more!

From Comparison To Inspiration

For those of you who aren’t familiar with my blog, one year ago I switched over to a WordPress powered site after over seven wonderful years under Blogger. The reason for the switch was simple- my life made its most drastic change so far, and it felt only right to have my blog follow along. After doing…

Music Therapy

Doctors, medications, advanced health science and technology- all necessities in the western world to attain optimal health and regain normal functioning. I fully support and condone these as a registered nurse working in the hospital setting, seeing patients heal and return to their normal lives every day with thanks to modern medicine. But there is…

Summer 2020 Update

I can’t believe how quickly this summer (or 2020, for that matter) is flying by – can you believe we are almost to September?! Maybe time really does fly when you are having fun. Despite the struggles I’ve shared here in past years, and the challenges that we are all inevitably facing on a global…

Crusing to Cozumel

I just returned from yet another weekend that was much too amazing for any amount of words to do it justice because if you’ve ever been on a cruise, then this post won’t require much effort on my end. If you have not, then I’ll just say that regardless of which cruise line you choose…

#TravelDiaries: San Francisco

I’ve traveled quite a bit around the U.S., but the only time I’ve visited the State of California was a short weekend trip to Los Angeles with a couple of close friends. Last week, I finally took the time to take a girls trip for my girlfriends’ 30th birthday- destination: San Francisco. This beautiful city…

#Travel Diaries: ATL & PCB!

This past weekend, I flew back to my old home in Atlanta, Georgia, and spent a full day there with my mom, sister, best friend, aunt and cousin. It was my first time going back since I got married and moved to Houston, Texas a little over two months ago. You know how they say…

#TravelDiaries: Toronto – 5 Years Later

You may remember my post from 5 years ago when my younger sister and I visited Toronto for my cousin’s wedding over the summer. This time, I went back for an entire week with my mom, to celebrate my grandfather’s 90th birthday. I didn’t think I could have more fun than I did last time, and…

#TravelDiaries: Jersey & NYC!

This past weekend, the hubby and I continued our #baecation with travel adventures and a quick getaway to New Jersey and New York City, but I’ll keep this post short and sweet- just like our trip! We flew to Jersey on Saturday morning and ended up staying in the city that evening and getting settled- understandable, considering…

Australia & New Zealand

We just spent the last two and a half weeks in Australia and cruising through New Zealand and no amount of words could ever describe what an amazing experience we had. We arrived in Sydney on Sunday, April 2, after what seemed like an eternity on the tiny seats of our plane, but immediately realized…

California Lovin’: Los Angeles

I have wanted to go to California for as far back as I can remember; the problem was that every time I though it was a good time to go, a supposedly “better” opportunity would arise that I would want to take advantage of for fear it may never come again. Anyways, my friend Reshma…

Cutest Town Around: Heidelberg, Germany

Today we went on an all-day excursion to Heidelberg, Germany, the cutest little town I have ever seen. It was pretty much straight like it was out of a fairy tale; the few main streets were narrow and long, filled with shops and restaurants and people walking everywhere. I’m pretty sure I didn’t see more…

Luxembourg, Trier, Frankfurt

So, the past few days we have been on yet another exciting excursion. We first traveled by private bus with Sven to Luxembourg to visit the official European Court of Justice. Luxembourg is by far the smallest country I have seen, and although there is not much to do, it is beautiful and most definitely…

Strasbourg, France

I should’ve started writing when I got here, and I kind of did, but that was in a private journal until I realized I might as well keep track of everything on here instead..especially since everyone keeps asking me to tell them about everything that happens here, in detail. I was a bit homesick when…

Study Abroad: Strasbourg, France

Today we had a pre-departure meeting for our study abroad trip to France next semester (less than a month away!). I even won an all expenses paid trip to Paris! Students from the University of Strasbourg that are international students here at GSU came to talk to us and tell us about their experience, and…

Haut Koenigsbourg Castle, Lunch, & Concentration Camp in Struthof, France

This morning started out to be a great day; the weather was dull but the energy was high, and I was excited for our day-long excursion. We first drove an hour on our private group bus to Prince William II’s castle. It wasn’t as magnificent as I had expected, but definitely extravagant for the time…

Fall 2019 Life Update

Summertime has passed, light and easy, and just like that it’s time for my fall life update. I can hardly believe how quickly the days have flown by this year and that I have successfully survived and thrived over a full year of my new life. I refer to it as my new life because…

#PuraVida en Costa Rica

It has been exactly one year since my first life-changing adventure, traveling to a new country and making a real impact. This is the trip that started it all, and I want to share a glimpse of this beautiful experience with you all.   During this trip, I got the amazing opportunity to volunteer at…

Winter Break Adventures: Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris

This past week was hands down one of the best winter breaks of my entire life. It started out in Brussels, Belgium. This was an organized group trip, so we had our coordinator, Sven, with us. We went to SHAPE which is the headquarters of a world military organization NATO. It was really interesting because…
