A Letter To Future Fatima

Dear Self in April 2015,

This is you from October 2013, hoping that you will be reading this and soaking it all in. You have had a lot of ups and downs in the past couple of years in nearly every aspect of your life, and nursing school has been the most challenging and rewarding experience during your time here, but you have come out stronger, wiser, and a better person overall. Today, your greatest dream in life has come true—you are an Emory nurse! I hope that you are healthy and happy in your relationships, and that you realize what a blessing it is to be where you are; I can only imagine what it must be like!

I hope you realize and still remember what a blessing it is to know who you are and what your life is about in the big picture of your faith. Remember that this is just the beginning; now that you are where you want to be, you can devote your life to your purpose of making the world a better place through God’s knowledge and compassion, but that is not the end of your journey. Continue to dream big and aim high to achieve the best in every aspect of your life, and always remember that life is short and you only get one chance to get it right. So, carry the light and energy of your faith with you as you try your best and leave the rest to God.

I hope you are ready to take your NCLEX in just a few weeks, before everyone else, so that you have time to enjoy your last summer of freedom before you begin working until retirement! I also hope that you have an amazing summer trip planned with people you love, and that you have your dream job waiting for you when you come back. Don’t forget to balance this with other areas of your life, but make sure you have enough fun to make up for all the misery I am going through as I write this. I am proud of us for finally not letting the fear of failure keep us from trying our best, and I have faith that you will go on to do great things despite the many challenges that surely await you in the future.

If you are actually reading this right now, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and then look around–be present and soak in all that you are experiencing in this very moment, because this is true happiness, so rare and long awaited, a blessing from above. Congratulations and good luck!

Peace and love,

Self from 2013
