During my last couple of years of undergraduate psychology at Georgia State University, I was a DJ at one of the nation’s top college radio stations: WRAS Album 88, GSU’s 100,000 watt student run radio station. Although I was only there for a short time, this is all I needed to realize just how special and unique this is to our school, and anyone who has worked for this station can vouch for how impossible it is to not fall in love with its wide range of local and world alternatives to mainstream hits that one simply cannot find anywhere else in the world.
On May 6, it was announced that GPB paid GSU $150,000 and would be taking over this station from 7am-5pm to replace its art with talk radio that could easily be found elsewhere. This news was a surprise to not only the students of GSU and listeners of WRAS, but also to the staff and management of the radio station itself. This is truly one of the most unjust things I have ever directly encountered, and I am beyond amazed at seeing the support and tireless efforts of thousands of people to #savewras, or least let them know we’re not going down without a fight.
Here are links to the social media forums, articles and news videos, websites with updated information, and much more to save Georgia State University’s beloved radio station, WRAS. Sign the petition, pick up some #savewras merchandise, and fight for justice as peacefully and legally as humanly possible!
